Our Program

At Pioneer Preparatory School, we offer a strong Core Knowledge curriculum which compliments Arizona’s Academic Standards and the national Common Core Standards. This curriculum is integrated with and supported by the Core Knowledge Language Arts program grades K–3, EngageNY Mathematics, Step Up to Writing, and Pearson Social Studies, Scott Foresman Science, Compass Learning, and many more supplemental programs to ensure the very best quality of education for our students.

NOTICE: It is important to inform you of some significant changes to Arizona Revised Statutes regarding the promotion and retention of third grade students. The newly revised law states that a student shall not be promoted from the 3rd grade if the student obtains a score on the AZ Merit reading test that demonstrates he or she is reading far below the 3rd grade level.

In order to plan our academic year purposefully, and prepare our students for the increased rigors of both the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and college and career expectations, Pioneer Preparatory School, with the assistance of the Arizona Charter Schools Association, has developed Essential Learning Outcomes (ELOs) for each grade level in both language arts and mathematics. Our ELOs are based on endurance, readiness, and relevancy for the next grade level—ensuring our students will be prepared for what lies next for them in their academic careers. Core Knowledge is a nonprofit organization which offers a solid K-12 curriculum, classroom materials, along with professional development for teachers. Core Knowledge Language Arts is a new complete language arts program created by the Core Knowledge Foundation. The program is split into two parts, the Skills Strand and the Listening and Learning Strand. In the Skills Strand,  the students will be learning the basics on how to read, include letters sounds, blending, and letter names. In the Listening and Learning Strand, the children will be putting the things the learn from the skills into practice by listening to stories read aloud by the teacher, as well as reading their own stories. Pearson Learning: CK History and Geography is a flexible program, edited by Core Knowledge founder E.D. Hirsch, Jr. follows the Core Knowledge Sequence to teach key history and geography topics at each consecutive level. With this program, students can build a unified, solid base of academic knowledge – the key to overall literacy and future success.  Click here for more information.

Everyday Math is a comprehensive Pre-K through grade 6 mathematics program developed by the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project and published by McGraw-Hill Education. Everyday Math is a research-based and field-tested curriculum that focuses on developing children’s understandings and skills in ways that produce life-long mathematical power.  Click here to learn more about Everyday Mathematics.

Step Up to Writing features research-based, hands-on writing strategies and activities that help students proficiently write narrative, personal narrative, and expository pieces; actively engage in reading materials for improved comprehension; and demonstrate competent study and critical thinking skills. This comprehensive resource creates a common writing language throughout the grade levels and content areas. With multiple strategies for each phase of the writing process, Step Up can fill in the gaps in the core curriculum or act as the core writing instruction.  Click here to learn more about Step Up to Writing.

Scott Foresman Science is a hands on science program that provides inquiry-rich content with teacher led inquiry activities and cross-curricular connections that link reading and science skills.  Students love to get their hands on science.

Compass Learning is an online program for students and teachers.  This program includes lessons and activities that are based on current and confirmed research about the way today’s students think and learn.
